Another great viewpoint, and the memorial to Syd Scroggie, poet and hillwalker, who was blinded and lost a leg in World War II, but continued to walk Scotland's hills. In the words of his self-penned epitaph,
"Allaw these steens there lies a lad
Pech't oot an' fairly deen,
He gaed his ain gait a' his life
But whiles wi' ithers een."

View of Auchterhouse Hill

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Auchterhouse Hill is the name of the hill north of the road. It's an ancient hill fort and at 426m the second highest point in the Sidlaw Range. You can't ride a road bike to the top though (or if you do it won't be good for your wheels).
On the road you get to the climb above Newton of Pitpointie and about 230m. The views north to the hill are good as are the views south down to Dundee and the Firth of Tay.

A very impressive view (after a steep hike up!) of the Firth of Tay in one direction and past Balmullo Quarry and to the hills to the south-west in the other.

A great viewpoint over the City with views across to Fife and beyond. There are several paths to challenge yourself to walk to the top, otherwise space for a few cars to park at the top.

Starting from the large, free community car park in Balkello Woods, riders can choose between the exhilarating return down the same road or venturing off-road on several dirt single-track paths through the enchanting Balkello Woods. This route promises an unforgettable adventure with both the thrill of the climb and the beauty of the Scottish landscape.

This extinct volcano stands tall above Dundee City. The summit at 174m offers amazing views of the city and north into the highlands. Previously an iron age hill fort and Roman pottery has also been found here. Today there is a war memorial and mobile phone tower on top and several art installations along the paths and trails on its flanks. It can get busy here during the day in nice weather but it's always worth the ride, either as a destination itself or as part of a longer loop of the city.
