July 24, 2025, Meikle Kinord Chapel Ruins

Someone has already written a detailed description here. At the top of the hill is the newer chapel, which now also has boarded-up windows and appears to be unused. Down by the water, you can find the remains of a wall, which can also be seen in the photos here. This may be the old chapel. However, I can't confirm this.

A 16th century chapel and burial ground were located at a site close to a later smallholding, called Meikle Kinord, on the southern shore of Loch Kinord. The chapel became ruinous and all remains had disappeared by the mid 19th century. A new private chapel was built close to the site of the old chapel and graveyard by Sir West Cunliffe Brooks in 1885, but it was never consecrated or officially used for worship. It became a museum or sorts in the 1890s, intended to house a number of prehistoric log boats found in the loch previously. This never materialised and it later became a hay store for the small holding and is presently used as a general store. https://powis.scot/sites/meikle-kinord-private-chapel-9643/

It's largely part of a nature reserve, and a good place for wildlife spotting. Various geese, ducks, red kites and other birds in particular. But also lots of butterflies. Note that water sports are not allowed March to September to protect the birds.

An interesting architectural bridge, that said, this bridge has gates at both ends that are not bike-friendly and are a nightmare for a heavily loaded bike.

A roaring fall under the bridge as the Feugh makes its way down towards the Dee. A separate pedestrian bridge provides a safe space to watch for Salmon. A short walk from. Banchory town centre or just 100m from pubic car park and toilets.
