Halmstad Castle dates back to the early 17th century, when Halland was next to Denmark and Skåne and Blekinge. Halmstads Slott was built on behalf of the Danish King Christian IV and is considered a fine example of the architectural style of the Nordic Renaissance, which is often referred to in Sweden as referring to the reign of the busy Danes King Christian IV Renaissance. Especially the slender high tower of the castle in Halmstad with the lavishly designed spire reminds of this special architectural style. The construction of Halmstad Castle began in 1595 under the direction of Flemish Hans van Stenvinkel the Elder, who was at the time Danish imperial master builder and from whose spring several castles and fortresses in the then Danish hemisphere originate. However, Stenvinkel died in 1601 and Halmstad Castle was completed by his apprentice, builder Willum Cornelissen, until 1615. The castle consists of four large wings, set up in a rectangle around a closed courtyard with a surface of 30x36 meters. The oldest wing of the castle is the west wing followed by the more luxurious south wing than the former royal residence. The lower north wing with the gatehouse and the east wing on the riverbank were completed last.
