Old Town, Rab

Highlight • Settlement

A wonderful old town with narrow streets where you can find restaurants and small shops. But churches, a ruin, a park and a great promenade (not on the side of the road) can be found on this narrow promontory, on which the old town is located.

Kamenjak Summit

Highlight • Summit

It is a very nice hike, but only for experienced hikers with good equipment (good hiking boots, etc.) Sharp-edged stones and lots of rubble.
Sports shoes and light clothing not recommended!!!!
This hike from Lopar to Kamenjak is the first half of an easy hike, but difficult from the junction to Kamenjak.

Nice simple cathedral in the middle of the old town of Rab. I particularly like the visible wooden construction of the roof.

Church of St. Peter in Supetarska Draga

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of St. Peter in Supetarska Draga is the oldest surviving church in Rab. It was donated to the Benedictine monks in 1059 by Rab bishop Drago, and in 1070 King Petar Kresimir IV certified the deed of donation.

The church has the simple shape of a three-aisled basilica with a simple front and an equally simple but beautiful marble portal. Inside the church you can see some valuable paintings and objects.

A mountain trail leads to the ruins, remains of the church on Sv. Damian - 223 m above the place Barbat. The latest research confirms the assumption that this is a building that had three functions: defence, view and observation, which also served as a place of refuge in the event of enemy raids. The floor plan of the fortifications allows the assumption that this could have been the largest Justinian fortification.

Legend Fountain of Kalifront

Highlight • Monument

In times long past, the young Kalifront tended the sheep of his father, who was Barbat's friend - Barbat was the lord of the eastern part of the island. Today's town of Barbat bears this name. While Draga grew into a young girl, she also looked after her father's sheep. Kalifront fell head over heels in love with the girl and as the passion gripped him, he finally gave in to his desire for love. The girl warned him, saying she wasn't allowed to because her mother had vowed her purity to the goddess Diana. Draga had to flee and Kalifront ran after her. He caught up with the girl in front of the Loparska Jamina cave. She screamed and begged Diana to help her. Diana heard her cry for help and froze her into a stone figure. The gods punished Kalifront and did not let him rest until the spring in the cave dried up - he had to live on forest fruits and plant trees until the end of his life. As the forest became denser, his fur grew ever thicker and he looked more like an animal than a human. In the end it looked like his forest.
This is how today's largest forest complex on the island and the peninsula received the name - "Kalifront".

Tomašić Lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

The viewpoint can be easily reached from Rab in an hour. The path meanders up the mountain, partly in the shade under old trees, but partly also very exposed to the sun. Sturdy shoes are strongly recommended.
Excellent views of the city of Rab and beyond. Significantly better view than from the Kamenjak itself, which can be reached from here in about 20 minutes.

Great view from the summit of the neighboring island of Pag and the mainland. However, the ascent is also the descent; anything else means carrying your bike. 😉

St. Peter’s Monastery in Supetarska Draga, on the island of Rab, is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries on the Adriatic. Built in the 11th century, it has preserved its Romanesque style and quiet spiritual atmosphere. Surrounded by the blue sea and green hills, it is a true jewel of history and peace.

The monastery is located on the north side of St. Euphemia Bay and was founded in 1444. The adjoining church is adorned with beautiful altars and images of saints of great artistic value. Of particular importance is the polyptych by the brothers Antonio and Bartolomeo Vivarini from the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon. An interesting sight is the monastery's wooden ceiling, the Tabulatum, decorated with sacred motifs.
