Loughmoe Castle is on private land but if you ask the farmer nicely he will let you cross his field to have a look around. It was the home of the Purcell family and the original parts date back all the way to the 12th century.

This medieval castle is located in the heart of Thurles and is thought to have been built as early as 1453. It sits on the edge of the River Suir and remains one of Thurles' most prominent features

There is nothing left of walls that enclosed the town, or of the manor known as Durlas Castle and later the Croak Castle on the west end of the town. What has survived is two tower houses the first of these being Black Castle (shown in the photo) and the second is hidden behind housing in the centre of the town. It makes an impressive sight amongst the smaller modern buildings.
