Palace Park

Highlight • Historical Site

This beautiful park is located just north of the tourist office. It is not part of the national park, which means entry is free. You enter by crossing a small bridge over a canal. It dates from 1890 when the village of Bialowieza was still under the control of the Russian tsars.

The latter also had a palace built which did not survive the vagaries of time. In the large wooded park, a Victorian-style building has a small museum which intelligently introduces you to the animal species that you can discover in the Białowieża Forest.

Green Velo section between Hajnówka and Budy

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The road is light, easy and pleasant. Unfortunately, for me such a long straight section is very tiring. Nevertheless, it is better to take this path than the asphalt road to Hajnówka.

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Trześcianka is one of the most recognizable wooden churches in Podlasie, belonging to the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Białowieża Palace - currently closed final railway station located in the center of Białowieża. The railway station was built within 4 months of 1897 for the needs of the residence of the tsars of Russia - the palace in Białowieża - erected by order of Tsar Alexander III in 1894. The tsar and his family traveled by train for hunting, which was prepared for weeks or even months earlier. Before his arrival, the entire station was decorated, he was greeted by the whole entourage. After the destruction of the wooden pavilions from the end of the 19th century during World War II, a station building in the late modernist style was built in their place in the 1970s, which was destroyed after being abandoned after 1994. The route to Hajnówka was used for over 100 years until the line was closed on December 31, 1993 due to unprofitability of transport. In the years 2014-2015, the construction of a new wooden pavilion referring to the railway station from the end of the 19th century was carried out. Due to the terrain limitations, the reconstructed building is not an exact copy of the old one (it was shortened and reversed; the original station faced the park and the palace).

Royal Oaks Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Royal Oak Trail is an educational trail located in the Stara Białowieża forest.

The shape of the oaks and the clusters of their arrangement on the trail also indicate human interference. Relatively low, approximately 32-meter-high, the trees are almost 10 meters smaller than the oaks that have always grown in a compact stand. This means that they were planted by human hands, as a park planting near the manor house that once existed here. One legend says that they were planted on the orders of King Sigismund the Old.
A wooden footbridge leads along the trail, equipped with boards with descriptions of the oaks, named after Polish and Lithuanian rulers who ruled the Forest. Walking along the trail gives you the opportunity not only to get to know nature, but also to deepen your historical knowledge. The author and initiator of this project was Jacek Wysmułek, a forester from the Białowieża Forest District, who in 1976 proposed to protect the entire area and create a historical educational trail there.
The footbridge is adapted for wheelchair users and has additional boards written in Braille. A road connecting Białowieża with the town of Narewka runs parallel to the path. You can get to the Siemianówka reservoir from here.
About 1.5 km north of this place (in section 281 - yellow tourist trail) there are remains of the foundation ruins of another hunting castle, probably built by the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Giedymin.
The Royal Oaks Trail is leased to a separate, private company whose task is to maintain the proper technical condition of the path and cleanliness of the premises. The company charges an admission fee.

Place of Power

Highlight • Natural Monument

Places of Power are places with a very large concentration of positive charges, which have a beneficial effect on the body. For humans, it is felt as a form of subtle vibration. Sensitive people, subjected to its effects, are full of vigour, rest faster and feel greater contact with nature. The place of power in branch 495 was discovered by accident in January 1993 by three people from Białowieża: Sergiusz Tarasiewicz, Borys Rusko, Piotr Bajko, who were looking for a small monument commemorating the death of a worker repairing the nearby Hajnówka-Białowieża railway line. It was destroyed by the Germans in 1944. The discoverers were enchanted by the positive feelings they experienced there.

In the spring of 1994, the area was examined by the famous dowser and geomancer Leszek Matela. He classified the find as a so-called Place of Power. The radiation recorded here is significantly increased in relation to the surroundings.

In September 1994, the dowser and bioenergy therapist Andrzej Ciupek confirmed the results of earlier studies. He classified the area as a place with a stronger effect than Jasna Góra, which he had previously examined, as well as its Orthodox counterpart, Święta Góra Grabarka.

It is believed that it was a place of pagan worship, as evidenced by the cleverly arranged stone circle. A legend forgotten today has it that in prehistory there was a hidden place in the Forest, where initiated people gathered to use their power and the power of stones to stop enemies approaching settlements hidden in the Forest.

The glade is located in the Białowieża Forest District, in section 495. It is about 0.5 km from Białowieża. A trail of about 4 km leads to the place of power. There is a parking lot here and railway tracks unused by trains. During the tourist season, handcars run on them.

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church

Highlight • Religious Site

According to local records, as early as the 17th century, there was a small Orthodox church in Białowieża, which was burned down along with the village during the plague of 1710. Records locate the church on Browska Road. The only surviving relic of it is said to be a bell from 1661, located in the cemetery chapel. Unfortunately, there is no confirmation of this information in known written sources. Initially, the Białowieża residents were assigned to the parish church in Shereshevo, which received funds and privileges from Ivan Abramovich as early as 1517. After the construction of the church in Suchopol in 1680 and the establishment of the Suchopol parish, they transferred to it. In 1704, the Białowieża manor received the right to collate and present the Suchopol priests from King Augustus II. Białowieża's affiliation with the Suchopol parish is confirmed by visitations from 1748, 1757, and 1769. In 1757, it had 733 faithful, including 83 from Białowieża. In 1769, the parish had 251 families – 23 from Białowieża (56 people were recorded as having gone to confession). Around 1782, the church in Suchopol burned down. Because the chapel built in its place could not accommodate all the parishioners, construction of a new church began. Construction work lasted seven years. In 1799, Białowieża, with 30 families, was still part of the Suchopol parish, although it had already had its own church for several years. The Białowieżaites may have been assigned to the Suchopol parish as late as 1800, but the 1801 visit does not mention them. The Orthodox church in Białowieża was built in 1793. The church's foundation deed was issued on May 2, 1797, by the Chief Treasurer, Major Jan Szczepanowski.

Krynoczka Holy Spring and Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

A spring in the Białowieża Forest, located 3 km from Hajnówka on the Hajnówka-Białowieża route, considered miraculous by the Orthodox Church.
Krynoczka (a spring, a source), was formerly known as the Miednoje forest, from the name of a stream flowing nearby. It is a place of annual pilgrimage for the feast of the Holy Trinity. Nearby stands a wooden church, built in 1846, dedicated to the Holy Brothers Maccabees, belonging to the parish of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God in Dubiny. By the well (currently located under a shelter), a small wooden chapel was built in 1848 from donations from local believers.
According to legends cultivated by the Orthodox, the cult of the holy spring in the Miednoje forest was known in the 13th century and was associated with the existence of a small monastery there, founded by monks fleeing the Tatar invasion. Another legend tells of a miraculous revelation of the icon of the Mother of God on a nearby tree.

The cult of the spring, documented in the 19th century, was only local, and the Holy Liturgies in the local chapel were held only on the day of the commemoration of the Brothers Maccabees and on the feast of the Exaltation of the Lord's Cross. Since 1894, the third day of liturgical celebrations has been the second day of the Holy Trinity. Krynoczka was also known to monks from the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius, who, on pilgrimage to the monastery in Wirów and to the monastery in Leśna, stopped there to pray with the local residents.

Pilgrims visiting Krynoczka traditionally wipe the sick place with a handkerchief moistened in its water, and then leave it on the fence behind the well, thus symbolically getting rid of the disease. The place is included in the travel plan in the tab - Recommended trips, weekend in Podlasie.

The skete is located on the outskirts of the village of Odrynki in the Kudak forest. The skete can be reached by two roads, but only one can be reached by car.

It is the only Orthodox skete in Poland (Skete of St. Anthony and Theodosius of Kiev-Pechersk). It was established in 2009 and is part of the Warsaw-Bielsk diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

The choice of Odrynki as the location for the construction of the skete was related to the fact that there was an Orthodox monastery of the Ascension of the Lord in this town. It was probably established in the first half of the 17th century and was dissolved in 1824. This monastery was subordinate to the monastery of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius.
The ceremonial consecration of the skete took place on September 15, 2009. The Divine Liturgy was led by Metropolitan Sawa, who called the creation of the hermitage a "miracle of the 21st century". This day was special and historic, because it was the first Holy Liturgy in 500 years that took place in this very place.

Immediately after its construction, in the 19th century, the church was widely considered (by the press of the time) to be the most beautiful in the entire Grodno Governorate. Its historical values are associated with the patrons and founders of the church - the royal family. The building was funded and built under the personal supervision of Tsar Alexander III, it was visited by the most distinguished state dignitaries and clergy, and was and is the place of important religious and secular ceremonies.
