It was built in the 12th century and is the oldest in the city. The current Baroque church dates back to the 17th century and was consecrated on October 14, 1668. Since September 25, 1433, the parish church has been a collegiate church. On March 25, 1992, by the papal bull Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus, the collegiate church was raised to the dignity of a cathedral. During his 7th pilgrimage to his homeland, visiting Łowicz, Pope John Paul II, on June 14, 1999, gave it the title of minor basilica. The church is located in the city center at the Old Market Square. https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parafia_Wniebowzi%C4%99cia_Naj%C5%9Bwi%C4%99tszej_Maryi_Panny_w_%C5%81owiczu

After the victory at Jena and a rest in Poznań (19 days), on 16 December 1806 Napoleon left the capital of Wielkopolska towards Warsaw. On 18 December in the evening he reached Łowicz. He stopped at the Hotel Imperial, which was located in a tenement house on the Market Square, owned by Ignacy Kosiorkiewicz. The city was illuminated in his honour and curious residents of the city gathered in front of the tenement house. The Emperor ate dinner, conferred for a while, sent a courier to Berlin and at around 8 p.m. he left for Warsaw.

The temple was built in 1838–1839. It represents late classicist architecture. The designer of the building was Jan Łuczaj. It is a brick building, on a rectangular plan with a narrower southern part. The façade has a six-column portico with a stucco Eye of Providence. Currently the seat of the Browarna art gallery. Next to the building is a brick belfry from 1866. The building of the former church and the belfry were entered into the register of historical monuments in 1967.

The history of the parish in Bełchów dates back to the mid-17th century. The first church in this place, probably wooden, dedicated to St. Matthias the Apostle, was built before 1548, as a branch of the parish in Skierniewice, to which Bełchów belonged. In 1832, a wooden, temporary church was built in Bełchów, which survived until 1866. Thanks to the efforts of the then parish priest, Fr. Julian Turulski (1865-1867), the current brick, single-nave, oriented church was built from contributions from the parishioners.
