To the northeast of Markteinersheim, Speckfeld Castle was built around 1200 by the Counts of Speckfeld on the old Nuremberg-Würzburg-Frankfurt Reichsstrasse (today's B 8). It was first mentioned in a document in 1226.
In 1412 Elisabeth von Hohenlohe gave the castle to the Limpurg taverns. Destroyed and plundered several times (in 1525 in the Peasants 'War and by the Swedes during the 30 Years' War in 1618/48), the castle was abandoned in 1693. The Limpurg taverns move into their new castle in Einersheim.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Rechtern-Limpurg-Speckfeld, but it was falling into disrepair. Today only a 15 m high wall of the former gate tower remains of the castle. The castle cellar is still inhabited: bats regularly hibernate here.

Gerichtslinde Above Castell

Highlight • Natural Monument

Between Schlossberg and Herrenberg is a mighty, surrounded by a wooden bench "court linden". Under the tree in the Middle Ages, the cent (high or blood court) was held at Castell on the mountain in the open air. In 1662 it was merged with the Cent Rüdenhausen.

The tower on the Schlossberg is only open once a year, namely on the wine hiking day in Castell, which takes place on the first weekend in September. Then you can climb the last visible building of the former castle and enjoy the view of the wide foothills of the Steigerwald up to the Rhön. The associated castle complex on the Schlossberg, destroyed and rebuilt in 1525 during the Peasants' War, was abandoned by the Counts of Castell after the construction of the new castle in 1691 and demolished in the middle of the 18th century.

As the information board at the nature reserve Schlossbergsattel at Markt Einersheim reported, the Schlossberg is 410 m high and is located on the southern edge of the southern tip of the Steigerwald. The cause of the emergence of the slopes and the plateau are the different hard layers of the middle Keupers. On the Schlossberg saddle is the reed sandstone.

The protected area has a size of approx. 78 ha. The area belongs to the European protected area network Natura 2000 and consists of small fields with different uses. Numerous endangered plants and animals were given habitat here. For example, the remains of the castle ruin Speckfeld offer refuge to various species of bats.

A radio tower looms on the Friedrichsberg and everything around is overgrown so that you don't have a view from here. A walk of about 2 km brings you to a lookout point.
