The Marienkirche, also known as the Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, is one of the most important historical buildings in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. The church, visible from afar, rises on the Kirchenberg and dates back to the 12th century in its origins. The combination of Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements is particularly impressive. Around the church are a historic cemetery and a Gothic charnel house, while the elevated location offers beautiful views of the town and the Danube landscape.

The pilgrimage church of Maria am Birnbaum is an impressive sight from afar, overlooking Wolfsthal. The baroque building with its distinctive towers was constructed in the early 18th century and dates back to the veneration of Mary on a pear tree. Around the church, you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views of the landscape on the Austrian-Slovak border.

Paved cycle path along the Leitha with many shady sections and many covered rest areas with benches and tables. Clearings along the path offer great views of the Leitha.

The great bustard is a truly special creature. Here you can learn a lot about them and, with a bit of luck, even observe some. I was surprised that almost 50 km of power lines were laid underground because of the bustard, but within sight, a huge concrete factory for wind turbines was built.

From here, it's still quite a distance to the lake. Take the pretty main street with its many shops, restaurants, and cafés until you reach the lakeside path that turns right, which then leads about 2 km through the reeds to the lake.
