Odeceixe Windmill and Village

Highlight • Settlement

Odeceixe is a small town known for its narrow, winding streets dotted with whitewashed houses and red tiled roofs. The moinho de Odeceixe which stands at the top of the village is one of the icons of its architecture.

At the foot of Odeceixe flows the Seixe around which crops abound. Far from the arid cultures of the heart of the land, this green setting looks like a little piece of paradise.

View of Praia de Odeceixe and Seixe River Mouth

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The whole fisherman’s trail of the Rota Vicentina is astonishing beautiful. Walking mostly along the dunes and cliffs overseeing the sea on the one and beautiful flowers on the other hand. The route has a perfectly organized webpage and good description. Walking on sand makes the distances of 15-23 km seem longer than they are but it is worth every step. We went in mid-May when it was comfortably warm and the flowers were in blossom all around us. My favourite trail in the world

Stork Nests on Coastal Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

Storks usually build their nests on posts, chimneys or gables. But in Portugal, and only here, there are storks that nest in the cliffs. What drives them to do this remains a mystery.

Odeceixe Windmill

Highlight • Monument

If you're lucky, this windmill will sing you a song. But it has to be in motion for that. Clay pots are attached to their wings, which then, inspired by the wind, make interesting noises. You can also visit this mill from the inside. Or simply enjoy your pretty exterior and continue your tour quickly.

Ribeira de Seixe Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Ribeira de Seixe, which takes its name from the Arabic sayh, "torrent", draws the natural border between the Alentejo and the Algarve, running serenely until it meets the Atlantic at Odeceixe Beach.

Between the village and the sea, the valley is simply magical: green banks, open views and a perfect environment for cycling.

You can even go up the river by canoe, observe birds (and who knows, an otter) or alternate between dips in the calm river and the ocean. This is one of those places that stay in your memory.
