A very special water castle is located in the Dortmund district of Bodelschwingh. Its uniqueness is expressed, on the one hand, in the special idyll and beauty of the building surrounded by a large moated pond. On the other hand, through the inaccessibility of the complex with its large park, which, due to private ownership of the building, is generally not accessible to the public. All the more valuable are the rare moments when the zu Inn- und Knyphausen family opens the castle gates and invites to events. These include experience markets and the Day of Open Monuments, which takes place annually at the end of summer. During the latter, guided tours of the castle's interior are even offered. The core of the complex is the magnificent manor house, which is located in the middle of the water surface covered with water lilies and is only connected to the old outer bailey by the stone arched bridge. It still rests today on historical oak piles in the ground and consists of several nested building parts and towers with different tower helmets, i.e. different tower points. The oldest parts, with roots dating back to 1300, are on the north side. The current Renaissance building with its characteristic turrets was created in the mid-16th century. It survived World War II and also mining operations by the nearby Westhausen colliery without damage. The baroque landscape garden was created towards the end of the 19th century. The adjacent forest was also part of it, but was separated by the construction of the nearby A45 motorway. The garden has old trees, some ponds and fountains, and extends around the water surface with the manor house. More information here: https://www.ruhrgebiet-industriekultur.de/schloss-bodelschwingh/

Beautiful castle north of Lünen. The ascent up to the castle is great to drive on the new asphalt. As a descent you can let it fly properly here, but watch out for the crossing below

The mill was supposed to be demolished in 2002, but some committed citizens of Lünen wanted to save the historic building and founded the Mühlenfreunde Lippholthausen association. Today, the Schlossmühle is in its old glory and is used by the Lünen registry office as a wedding room - an offer that many happy bridal couples have taken advantage of.

Sythen Castle is a moated castle near Haltern am See. The castle was mentioned in 758 under King Pippin. Various noble families then lived here on the site. From 1821 to 1965 the castle was owned by the Westerholt and Gysenberg families. In 1946 a children's convalescent home was also set up. After that the castle was left to nature. Today a support association looks after the castle, which was renovated with the active help of volunteers. It can be rented for events such as parties and weddings and concerts are also held there.

Very nice moated castle. The NSG Bodelschwingher Wald is also very beautiful, but the A 45 goes straight through here, which is hardly noticeable after a few meters.
