Yes, the region offers several circular routes. For instance, the Morské oko – Tri tably loop from Remetské Hámre is a difficult 24.4-mile (39.2 km) route exploring the Vihorlat Mountains. Another option is the Morské Oko loop from Morské oko, a 13.7-mile (22.1 km) trail through the natural reservation.
Cyclists can explore diverse natural features. The Zemplínska Šírava reservoir, often called the 'Slovak Sea,' offers picturesque views along its shores. The Vihorlat Mountains are home to natural gems like Morské oko (Sea Eye Lake), a protected natural reservation, and Sninský kameň, which provides panoramic views. The region also features other lakes such as Benatina lake and Senianske ponds, and extensive woodlands.
While many routes in the Sobrance area are rated moderate to difficult due to elevation changes, there are options for various ability levels. For families, it's advisable to look for routes with less elevation gain and paved surfaces. The region's extensive woodlands and areas around the Zemplínska Šírava reservoir might offer flatter sections suitable for a more relaxed family ride, though dedicated cycling paths around the reservoir are still developing.
The best time for touring cycling in Sobrance is generally during the warmer months, from spring through early autumn. This period offers more favorable weather conditions for exploring both the reservoir areas and the Vihorlat Mountains. During summer, the Zemplínska Šírava reservoir is a hub for activities, but be prepared for potential heat. Spring and autumn provide cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery.
