Church of St Jerome

Highlight • Religious Site

Cerkev Sveta Hieronima, the church of St Jerome, is improbably situated at 3,340 feet (1,018 m) on the slopes of Nanos and is visible from many miles around.

The story of its origin is an interesting one. It’s said that a hermit named Hieronima lived in a hut on the windswept Nanos massif. The local people would bring him food and other necessities and, in gratitude to them, he'd light a bonfire on Nanos to warn them whenever a storm was approaching. The people thanked him in turn by erecting this very church, so the story goes…

Branica Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Road through the valley of the river Branica. The road is in good condition (6/10). The advantage is beautiful nature and above all very little traffic. If you go from the direction of Branik and continue towards the Karst (Kobdilj, Štanjel, Komen, Sežana), turn right and continue the path. The slope towards Kobdili is less steep than from Branik towards Štanel along the main road, so this variant is more suitable if we have travel bags on bicycles.

For via ferrata friends a must! (If you are in the vicinity.) From the cliff you have all the time beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and cities.

For small children and inexperienced the via ferrata is rather not suitable.

Sources of the Vipava River

Highlight • River

The river Vipava springs here in several springs directly from the mountain and forms here a kind of source delta. In this area there are many small bridges and Vipava reminds you almost a little bit of Venice.

Beautiful panoramic road that flows on the top of the hills between Veliko Polje and Stiak. Pleasant to ride in both directions but, if you climb from the Raša Valley to Štiak, after the tough ascend you can breath and relax. Springtime is the best season to enjoy it.

Of medieval origin, it is one of the most beautiful, fascinating and best preserved villages in the Vipava Valley. The local stone is the element that deeply characterizes its architecture, so much so that the village is considered Slovenian cultural heritage. The narrow streets, sometimes less than a meter wide, called “gase”, form the cross of St. Andrew, patron saint of the parish of Goče. Worthy of note are the stone portals leading to the courtyards of the houses built in Karst style, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the magnificent portal of the Church of St. Andrew and the wonderful entrance to the cemetery. Inside the village there are 4 altars with high reliefs, from the late 17th century, called “pili”. They represent the key stations of Christ's passion and serve as stations during the procession on the feast of Corpus Christi. The fifth station is represented by the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, from 1687, located near the cemetery. Goče is also a true museum of viticulture, famous for its ancient underground cellars that testify to the long winemaking tradition of the area. The cellars, dug directly into the limestone rock, represent the architectural treasure of the village. What is extraordinary is their number; in fact, towards the end of the 19th century it was said that there were more cellars than domestic buildings. Currently there are more than 60 of them and some, very old, do not have electric lighting.

Lie down on the nearby benches in the shade on a hot day, a beautiful view, a refuge not far away. Highly recommended to come up here or stop here by climbing to the top of Nanos. To go up to the refuge you can take the path or reconnect to the dirt road that leads up to it, a longer but quieter choice.
