The Wildsee, also called the Wilder See, is located in the northern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, northeast of the Ruhestein in the municipality of Baiersbronn. The lake, far from any settlement, lies at an elevation of 910 m, east of the main ridge of the Northern Black Forest, in a Würm glacial cirque with several moraine ridges, up to 120 m deep. It is particularly visible from the neighboring Seekopf (1055 m above sea level). The almost circular cirque lake has an area of 2.4 hectares, a depth of 11.5 m, and drains via the Schönmünz River into the Murg. It is slightly dammed, as it was once used as a surge water for log rafting. The Wildsee is part of the Black Forest National Park, established in 2014. Since 1939 it was surrounded by the Wilder See – Hornisgrinde nature reserve, which stretched over an area of 766 hectares across the highlands east of the mountain ridge between Hornisgrinde and Ruhestein and has largely been incorporated into the national park.

With its high location in the Karwendel Mountains and directly below the Reither Spitze, the Nördlinger Hut offers a spectacular view that is appreciated by hikers and mountaineers alike. With a total capacity of 65 beds, divided into shared rooms and dormitories, it offers good overnight accommodation in this impressive mountain landscape. The operators value prior arrangement when visiting with dogs, especially on weekends when dogs are not allowed in the hut. Guests have the opportunity to choose breakfast, half board or à la carte options, with Tyrolean specialties and regional products taking center stage. For an overnight stay, however, you should note that payment is only possible in cash and although there is mobile phone reception, there is no WiFi available. The Nördlinger Hütte can be reached via various approaches, with walking times ranging from one hour to six hours. The hut serves as a starting point for numerous hiking tours in the area, such as to the Freiungsspitze or the Kuhlochspitze, as well as for the Freiungen Höhenweg and the Zirler via ferrata.
