Mount Elmer is 9,676 feet tall and is oftentimes hard to see from the city because it is blocked by Flat Top Mountain and the slightly shorter Mount Jardine from most angels of view. The trail up Green Canyon is the most popular approach and features a few gates on the trail (like some other trails in the area). Remember to always close gates that you go through in this wilderness are, as there is some private property lining the trail during certain sections.

At an elevation of 9,566 feet, Mount Jardine is one of the tallest mountains in the Bear River Range. There are a number of trails that merge at the final summit pitch to the summit, but the final few hundred meters of the peak require some class 2/3 scrambling. Even stopping at the saddle provides open views of the valley and foothill peaks of Logan.

Smithfield Canyon Trail is a wilderness trail in the Mount Naomi Wilderness. The trail doesn't have a lot of trail markers and doesn't stay super-maintained (due to Wilderness boundary regulations), but it offers a primitive hiking experience with views along the way. That being said, the views from the nearby peaks are even better, and you can easily add a summit to your hike after reaching the end of the trail. There are a few backcountry camping spots once you pass the wilderness boundary if you are looking to do an overnight trip.

When is the best time to see the wildflowers in Mount Naomi Wilderness?

The alpine meadows of Mount Naomi Wilderness are famous for their spectacular wildflower displays. For the most vibrant colors, plan your hike for the summer months, typically from July through August. The high-elevation meadows are carpeted with a wide variety of flowers, creating a stunning backdrop for your adventure.

Are dogs allowed on the trails?

Yes, dogs are generally permitted in the Mount Naomi Wilderness, but they must be kept under control at all times to protect wildlife and other hikers. In watershed areas, such as near Tony Grove Lake, regulations may require dogs to be on a leash. Always check local signage at the trailhead for the most current rules.

Are there any family-friendly or beginner hikes?

Yes, the area offers trails suitable for beginners and families. The Naomi Peak Trail, starting from Tony Grove Lake, is a popular choice due to its gradual ascent and incredible views. For a gentler option at lower elevations, consider the River Trail loop from Utah State University, which is a relatively flat and shorter walk.

Where can I find waterfalls?

The High Creek Canyon Trail is well-known for its waterfalls and beautiful alpine scenery. It's a great option if you're hoping to see water features during your hike. The trail follows the creek, offering several opportunities to enjoy the cascades, especially during the spring and early summer runoff.

What are some good circular or loop hikes?

For a rewarding loop hike, the Smithfield Canyon Trail loop from Smithfield Dry Canyon Trailhead is a great moderate option. It offers a steady climb through a scenic canyon. If you're looking for a more strenuous challenge, the Beirdneau Peak loop from Ouch Wall provides a full day of hiking with significant elevation gain and expansive views.

How do I get to the trailheads and what is parking like?

Trailheads are accessible from U.S. Highways 89 and 91. The most popular access point is Tony Grove Lake, which has a large parking area, but it can fill up quickly on weekends, so an early start is recommended. Other trailheads, like those for Green Canyon and Smithfield Canyon, also have designated parking areas. Be aware that some access roads may be unpaved.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

The diverse ecosystems support a rich variety of wildlife. It's common to spot moose, mule deer, and elk, particularly in the meadows and near water sources. Bighorn sheep can sometimes be seen on the higher rocky slopes. The area is also home to beavers, mountain lions, and black bears, so it's important to be bear-aware and store food properly if camping.

Are there options for multi-day backpacking trips?

Yes, the 65-mile network of maintained trails offers excellent opportunities for backpacking. You can connect various canyon and ridge trails to create custom loops of varying lengths. Popular routes often involve linking trails around Tony Grove Lake or creating longer traverses between major canyons. Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles and check camping regulations for the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

What are the trails like for viewing alpine meadows?

Many trails in the wilderness lead to stunning high-elevation meadows. The trail to Naomi Peak is renowned for its expansive meadows, especially during wildflower season. The northern part of the wilderness, accessible via trails like High Creek, also features incredible alpine meadows alongside gnarled, old-growth trees.

What makes the hikes here challenging?

The primary challenges are elevation and rugged terrain. Many trails involve significant elevation gain, ascending from deep canyons to peaks over 9,000 feet. For example, the strenuous Mount Jardine via Smithfield Canyon Trail climbs nearly 4,000 feet. The weather can also change rapidly at high altitudes, so hikers should always be prepared with layers and rain gear.

What do other hikers say about Mount Naomi Wilderness?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers frequently praise the stunning panoramic views from the peaks, the beautiful and diverse wildflower displays in summer, and the sense of solitude on less-traveled trails. The well-maintained trail system and the variety of routes, from canyon walks to strenuous peak ascents, are also commonly highlighted.
