The Comerío Public Plaza loop from Ortiz offers a truly demanding touring cycling experience through Puerto Rico's central mountainous region. This difficult 32.5-mile (52.4 km) route, with its substantial 3781 feet (1152 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 48 minutes. You'll ride through lush, verdant mountains and valleys, often with the Río La Plata in view, experiencing what locals call "Paradise Between Mountains." Expect challenging climbs and rewarding descents on mostly paved, yet steep, inclines.

Planning your ride should account for the route's strenuous nature, requiring very good fitness. The Plaza Pública de la Trova Comerío is a key landmark, serving as a convenient starting or ending point where you can also explore local culture. While specific parking details aren't always clear, the plaza area is generally accessible. Given the tropical climate and significant effort involved, it's wise to carry plenty of water and consider riding during cooler parts of the day.

What makes this route stand out is its blend of physical challenge and the authentic natural and cultural beauty of central Puerto Rico. You'll encounter stunning panoramic viewpoints, such as those near the historic El Salto dam, offering impressive vistas of the surrounding mountains and foliage. This loop provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the island's interior, a stark contrast to its coastal areas, making it a notable destination for advanced touring cyclists.
