Heiligenbrunn Cellar District

Highlight • Historical Site

Known for “9 places, 9 treasures” - the Kellerstöckl in Heiligenbrunn are well worth seeing. The approximately 80 surviving wine cellars from the 18th and 19th centuries are wooden blocks that were thrown at with clay and are partly still covered with straw today. There are also a few showrooms. These are signposted. In the Buschenschanken you get the Uhudler (Rabiatperle), for which this region is known, but also many other regional specialties. The cycle path was officially opened at the beginning of September.
This approx. 14.5 km long section from Großpetersdorf to Rechnitz was developed as a cycle path on the former railway line. It leads from Großpetersdorf via Hannersdorf, Schandorf and Schachendorf to Rechnitz.

The entire cycle route from the main square in Oberschützen to the reservoir in Rechnitz has a total length of around 42 km. Of these, around 21 km were expanded on the former route and around 2 km on the goods route network.
In the section from Sonnseitn Oberschützen to the L424a Bad Tatzmannsdorfer Ast, a footpath and cycle path was built, and from here a cycle path to Schönberggasse in Oberwart.

St. Emmerich Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Church as a symbol of a borderless Europe.
The church almost fell apart during the time of the Iron Curtain, as neither Hungarians nor Austrians could reach the church and was restored after the borders were opened.

A truly beautiful church. More or less hidden away in the vineyards of Gaas, but a hike up here is definitely worthwhile.

A beautiful church, rebuilt after the World Wars as a peace project. The square around the church is also inviting for strolling and relaxing. We enjoyed our time here.

St. Emmerich's Church, consecrated in 1903, served as the parish church of Inzenhof, Tschanigraben, and several Hungarian communities until World War II. During the Iron Curtain era, it stood in no man's land between Austria and Hungary. The communists allowed the church to fall into disrepair, making it inaccessible from Austria. St. Emmerich's Church, near Güssing, offers ideal conditions for encounters between people from both sides of the still-existing border. It lies precisely on the Austro-Hungarian border strip, in a clearing amidst a vast forest, and is the only place along the border where people can meet for church service or a concert without border formalities – a place with great symbolic value.

An old watchtower from dark times. Fortunately, that is no longer necessary today. The tower is fenced off so that no one would even think of climbing up.

It is a very nice cycle path with a rest area to Gr. Petersdorf with repair tools and a rest area near Rechnitz are both very nice. This railway path is also highly recommended for families. Don't forget the wooden locomotive in Hannersdorf with a playground and pasture area.
