This is the premier landscape view in all of Kinnickinnick State Park. From this vantage point, you can see the Kinnickinnick River on your left as it enters the St. Croix River, with the state of Minnesota stretching out on the opposite shore.

This marks more the turn onto the bridge that brings you to the Mill Ruins, not necessarily the ruins themselves. Unless the person that created this was there at a different time of year where you could see all the way to the ruins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some popular places for hiking in Prescott?

Prescott offers a variety of highly-regarded hiking areas. Thumb Butte is a local landmark known for its stunning views. For unique rock formations, many hikers explore the trails around Granite Mountain. The vast Prescott National Forest envelops the area, providing hundreds of miles of trails through diverse landscapes.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes in the area?

Yes, Prescott has several great options for families. The Lynx Lake Recreation Trail is a gentle 2.4-mile loop around the picturesque Lynx Lake, located within a cool Ponderosa pine forest. It's mostly flat and shaded, making it ideal for a leisurely walk with children.

Can I bring my dog on the hiking trails?

Many trails in and around Prescott are dog-friendly, but policies can vary. Most trails within the Prescott National Forest allow dogs, provided they are kept on a leash and you clean up after them. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to hike, as some areas, like certain parts of the Granite Mountain Wilderness, may have restrictions to protect wildlife.

What is the best time of year to hike in Prescott?

Thanks to its mild four-season climate, you can hike in Prescott year-round. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures for hiking. Summer mornings are also a great time to hit the trails before the afternoon heat, especially in higher-elevation, forested areas. Winter can bring snow, which adds beauty to the landscape but may require appropriate gear for icy conditions.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced hikers?

For those seeking a challenge, the Granite Mountain Trail is an excellent choice. This strenuous 8.2-mile trail is located within the Granite Mountain Wilderness and rewards experienced hikers with breathtaking rock formations and panoramic views from the summit.

How does hiking in Prescott compare to Sedona?

Both Prescott and Sedona offer fantastic hiking, but with different scenery. Sedona is famous for its iconic red rock formations and vortex sites. Prescott's landscape is more varied, featuring the unique granite dells, serene lakes like Watson and Lynx, and dense Ponderosa pine forests. Prescott often feels more like a classic mountain town experience compared to Sedona's distinct desert environment.

What is the terrain like on the Peavine National Recreation Trail?

The Peavine Trail follows the path of a former railroad, so the terrain is relatively flat and wide with a gentle grade. The surface is mostly crushed rock, making it suitable for walking, running, and cycling. It offers excellent views of Watson Lake and the Granite Dells without any strenuous climbing.

Are there any circular walks or loop trails available?

Yes, Prescott has many excellent loop trails. The Mississippi River & Lake Rebecca β€” Hastings is a popular easy loop. For a more moderate option with stunning scenery, the Watson Lake Loop Trail is a 4.8-mile route that circumnavigates the lake, taking you through the famous granite dells.

Where can I find trails with water features like lakes or waterfalls?

While natural waterfalls are rare and seasonal, several trails are centered around beautiful lakes. The trails at Watson Lake, Lynx Lake, Goldwater Lake, and Willow Lake all offer scenic waterside hiking. These are also popular spots for kayaking and fishing.

What should I know about parking at popular trailheads?

Parking can be limited at popular trailheads like Thumb Butte and Watson Lake, especially on weekends. Many trailheads within the Prescott National Forest require a day-use fee, which is often cash-only, so it's wise to bring small bills. Arriving early is the best way to secure a parking spot.

What do other hikers enjoy about the trails around Prescott?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning and unique scenery, from the granite dells to the pine forests. The variety of trails, which cater to all skill levels, is another frequently mentioned highlight.

Are there any good options for backpacking in the Prescott National Forest?

The Groom Creek Loop Trail #307 is a well-regarded 9-mile loop that can be done as a long day hike or a more relaxed overnight trip. The vastness of the forest provides many options for creating longer multi-day loops, but be sure to check water source availability and any fire restrictions before you go.
