Rosenburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The journey on the asphalt road by bike is exhausting, that's the "demanding" thing about it. The nice thing is the great location of the Rosenburg and (if possible) of course a visit to the very beautiful and richly decorated rooms in the castle an inn, where you can take a break with a snack or more after exertion. Slightly below the castle, on the slopes of the river Kamp, is the Graslhöhle, which can be reached in a few minutes on foot.

Eggenburg town centre

Highlight • Settlement

Right on the main square of the medieval town, you can sit in front of an inn and enjoy the cityscape. The town has a completely preserved city wall. Unique cultural monuments and museums invite visitors to travel back in time.

History:
The granite plateau above the Schmida, on which Eggenburg is founded, was already inhabited by people in prehistoric times, from the Neolithic period. The town was founded in the Babenberg period (976-1246). After the turn of the millennium, Lower Austria was settled as far as the Nordwald - today's Waldviertel. To secure this area, the fortified border town of Eggenburg was built around 1160/70, already with market function. The first documented mentions of Eginpurch date from the 12th century. In the dispute between Premysl Ottokar and Rudolf von Habsburg, Eggenburg sided with the Habsburgs, who then renewed the town's city rights on August 13, 1277.
A fire disaster in 1808 led to the town's decline. With the construction of the Franz Josef Railway in 1870, Eggenburg could be reached from Vienna in two hours. The population grew again, and the garden city initiative of the merchant Franz Gamerith led to the town expanding.

Stiefernbach Stream Crossings Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

An estimated ten times this path crosses Stiefernbach. The water is not deep, with the right technique you will not get wet, mostly. I managed not to get wet in 9 out of 10 attempts. Rather, what warmer seasons, Trail is marked as Mariazeller long-distance trail

Arche Noah Botanical Garden

Highlight • Natural Monument

Noah's Ark, Society for the Conservation of Crop Diversity & Its Development is a Lower Austrian association based in Schiltern near Langenlois.
Tasks of the association are the preservation of regional crop diversity and the provision of varieties of agricultural crops that have become rare or are no longer commercially available. This works in the form of an exchange, in which the members of other members seed, increase, and then redistribute, as well as on their own initiative to track down old varieties. The Noah's Ark also operates a botanical collection, the largest variety archive of seeds, onions and tubers of rare vegetables, cereals and other crops in German-speaking countries. Thus, the regular refreshment of the seed bank can be implemented decentralized.

The Eggenburg main square impresses above all with its spaciousness, which reflects the importance of the princely city of Eggenburg as a trading and market center.

The Bachlweg is no longer an official trail. Stream crossings are difficult due to flooding, as the stream has changed significantly. You simply have to wade through. It's still worth it, though; a great scenic tour, and technically easy.

the section from Tautendorf to Stiefern beside Stiefernbach is a tough ride and most properly not suitable for beginners. There are some challenging stream crossings and don't be surprised if you have to overcome some obstacles

It looks very impressive - and the festival there is said to be fantastic. Yesterday (7/7/24), for example, Gershwin's "Rapsody in Blue" was performed.

The stream crossings are the absolute highlight of the Bachlrunde. Real fun and no problem when the water is low. After periods of rain or heavy rain, at least wet feet are guaranteed 😉.
