Charlottendorf originally arose as a so-called colony or settlement founded on former estate lands. Such small places were often established in the 18th and 19th centuries by estate owners to cultivate land or settle workers and tenants. The name usually indicates a noble namesake, "Charlotte". Today, Charlottendorf appears almost like a scattered small hamlet in the middle of the typical East Holstein estate landscape. Old farmsteads, gentle hills, and extensive fields shape the image of the small place. In between, hedgerows and narrow paths wind through the quiet landscape, lending the surroundings their special North German character.
