Just 1.5 miles down the Wind Cave Canyon Trail is the junction for the East Bison Flats Trail. After a short but steep climb, you reach more gentle, rolling hills through the open prairie. You are treated to sweeping views over the prairie, to Buffalo Gap, and the Black Hills. Like everywhere else in the park, you have ample opportunities to see some of the iconic animals that live here, like bison, elk, mule deer, pronghorns, and an abundance of prairie dogs. Bison roam the open prairie and are some of the main attractions of the park. Use caution around these majestic animals; their behavior can be unpredictable, and their massive size and speed make them dangerous. Please observe these animals from a safe distance.

Cold Brook Canyon is comprised of rocky, loose cliffs among sparse ponderosa forest that turns into open prairie. The trail in the canyon crosses a few prairie dog towns, which are great places to see both prairie dogs, prairie falcons, and other raptors. You also have a good chance of seeing bison in this area too. Remember to keep your distance from these amazing animals. Although they look slow and hulking, they are actually quite fast and can be dangerous.

This exceptional archaeological site was found by chance in the garden of a family in the city. Their house was built on the edge of an old swamp where hundreds of mammoths long ago got bogged down and then died on the spot. You therefore have the opportunity to visit an exceptional excavation site, transformed into a museum. The place besides hundreds of mammoth skeletons, being unearthed also exposes a giant Short-Faced Bear skeleton. This animal, living more than 18,000 years ago, was the largest bear ever known. With a length of 3 meters, it could reach almost 4 meters when standing! Next to it the Grizly looks small. This is an exciting visit not to be missed, if you are staying in Hot Springs. Hot Springs is my favorite town in the southern Black Hills. It has a very relaxing place on the edge of the Fall River: Chautauqua Park. It has small motels that offer affordable prices, and also an organic products store located on Jennings Avenue. You will find a Chinese buffet restaurant with unbeatable prices. An interesting upper town, a Spa which has aged a little and ends up giving a special charm to this town. It is a perfect resting place.
