Rauher Kamm

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The rough ridge is one of the northernmost alpine tours in the northern Limestone Alps. The approach is typically north-east via Raneck + Bärenlacken. After a long climb through the forest, the trail leads from about 1500m north side just below the ridge along, from about 1600m, the path changes directly to the ridge and swings in several (mostly south-facing) uphills towards Ötscher-Vorgipfel. Before exiting, the steep southern flank with narrow grass bands and rocky steps must be overcome. The climbing-technical difficulties are manageable, but not to be underestimated are the deep views of the upswings and the resulting exposure. There is hardly any insurance, only at individual key points there is assistance by metal pins.

The German narrator and poet Reinhold BRAUN (1879-1959) recommended a deep, blissful summit rest to the mountain hiker in the following poem: „Some climb the mountain in haste and take too short a summit rest and see neither beauty nor sunshine, they just want to have been 'up there', and return with everyday senses and outlook to the valleys of life. Do you truly want to be blessed, your soul to wander bright and pure: Enjoy what you have hiked for, in a deep, blissful summit rest!“

After visiting the impressive lookout tower and the Prochenhütte, be sure to visit the summit cross. The panorama is breathtaking and alpine. It's recommended to leave your bike at the bottom just before the final climb. If it's not too heavy, you can also carry or push it up for a summit photo; it's not far.

Very strenuous for hikers, as there are climbing sections that don't require a rope, but it's worth it! Quote: a rope wouldn't have been bad...

The Dürrenstein, at 1878 m high, is located in the UESCO World Heritage Site of the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area. The 11th stage of the Luchstrail leads from Göstling over the Dürrenstein to Lunz/See. It is a lonely mountain with a very long climb. There is the possibility of spending the night at the Ybbstalhütte to split up the long climb.
