Guntersdorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

In the second half of the 16th century, a late medieval building complex was expanded into an extensive complex with a moat.

According to the purchase agreement of December 10, 1717, Karl Anton Count Serenyi sold the Guntersdorf estate for 236,000 guilders to Johann Rudolf Freiherrn von Ludwigsdorf. [1] Since then, the castle has been owned by the Ludwigstorff family. It was badly damaged and looted during World War II. Around 280 hectares of arable land and twenty hectares of forest belong to the castle. The owner of the estate was Carl Hugo Ludwigstorff, his grandson Dominik Ludwigstorff took over the castle and estate management in 1990. [2]

The castle and the area can now be rented out for events. It is a listed building.

In 1358, the Moravian margrave Johann Heinrich of Luxemburg had his sovereign seat, the so-called older castle, built 80 m above the river Thaya.
In the 15th century the castle Neuhäusel came into the ownership of the Eitzinger, the owner of Kaja. Neuhäusel was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. After the First World War, the castle went to the Czech state.
From a viewing terrace you can enjoy an overwhelming panoramic view of the Thayatal.
The ruin can only be entered as part of a guided tour, where you can see from a viewing platform to the striking Thaya loop. Otherwise you get from the outside almost nothing to see, not even the Thaya.

In its current form, it is a late Gothic church, built between 1338 and the first half of the 16th century. The church with a tower in Romanesque style was built at the beginning of the 12th century. After the fire that broke out in 1335 and destroyed a significant part of the church at that time, construction of a new church in Gothic style began in 1338, while the remains of the floor plan of the original tower were preserved.
