August Ganghofer (1827–1900) was a significant German forestry official and the father of the writer Ludwig Ganghofer. From 1879, he managed the Royal Bavarian Forestry Administration and initiated the founding of the Bavarian State Institute for Forestry and Forest Management (LWF) in Freising in 1881. Career: From 1859 to 1873, he managed the forestry district in Welden, where he had the August Ganghofer Avenue, named after him today, planted. He was elevated to the personal nobility in 1887. Works: His standard work "Der praktische Holzrechner" (The Practical Wood Calculator) was published in 1872 and went through seven editions. Memorial Site: In Welden stands the August-Ganghofer-Hütte, the former forester's official hut, which is now part of the Ludwig-Ganghofer-Rundwanderweg (Ludwig Ganghofer Circular Hiking Trail).
