Highest Point of the Rennsteig

Highlight • Summit

The highest point is a must when you are in the vicinity. An even better view is only a few meters further along the path along the viewing platform.

The highest and at the same time one of the most beautiful vantage points directly on the Rennsteig. Above the town of Suhl, where the Rennsteig reaches its highest point, it bears the name of the "inventor" of the Rennsteig hike. The path runs here on the south side of the Großer Beerberg just below the summit, the highest in the Thuringian Forest (982 meters), which itself has no view worth mentioning, but is nevertheless of great value as a protected moor biotope.

In the foreground are Heidersbach and Goldlauter and the district-free town of Suhl, which is enclosed on both sides by steep mountains (to the right of Domberg with the Bismarck Tower, to the left of the Ringberg and Döllberg). In the background, when visibility is good, you can see as far as the Rhön and far in the direction of Coburg.

A commented panorama picture is attached to the wooden viewing platform for orientation. It comes from Roland Kastner from the Suhl local group of the Rennsteig Club.

Ten Ponds

Highlight • Lake

The ponds to the left of the hiking trail are terraced. There is a shelter next to it, so you can take a refreshing footbath. There is a drainpipe at the bottom pond. You can also refresh your face or arms here, which was a relief on my hike due to the high temperatures.

A quiet, historic place with fantastic panoramic views over Suhl and the Thuringian Forest. The small chapel sits enthroned on a rocky outcrop on the cathedral hill, and its frescoes tell the tragic Ottilie legend.

Highest hiking hut, at 924m, on the Rennsteig. Built in 1931 as the "Shelter on Erleshügel". It's great that the hut is open in the middle of the week and even in the fall. Not a given. Friendly service and great food.
