The Eichsfeld Cross in Hesse has an interesting history.
11
0
The Eichsfeld Cross was erected as a pilgrim's cross directly on the border with Thuringia in 1980. It was deliberately placed very close to the border, as West German pilgrims had been barred from making the pilgrimage to Hülfensberg since the GDR, as they had done for centuries. When erecting the cross, the regional helpers had to be careful not to cross the border marked by pillars, as they were closely watched by GDR soldiers.
