The volcanic cone was formed 108 million years ago. Magma penetrated the Devonian sandstone layers and solidified below the earth's surface. This passage or chimney made of hard basalt protected the surrounding sandstone from erosion, leaving the conical shape of the Neuerburger Kopf, which is still clearly visible today. Classified as belonging to the Cretaceous period, the Neuerburger Kopf and the neighboring Lüxeberg are the oldest volcanic features in the Eifel. The Neuerburger Kopf was formerly called Merkuriusberg (Mercurius, Roman god of trade). The former name is explained by the Roman trade and military roads that crossed next to it. The current name refers to a castle. Archbishop Albero (1131-1152) had a "novum castrum" (= new castle) built, which was completed in 1168 by Archbishop Hillin and expanded by Archbishop Henry II (1260-1286). The castle was used primarily to collect customs duties on the neighboring trade route and was one of the seven castles of the Electorate of Trier, along with Manderscheid, Arras, Saarburg, Grimburg, Welschbillig and Ehrenbreitstein. The last inhabitants of Hatzdorf, which had been ravaged by the plague and abandoned, settled under the protection of the castle and founded the village of Neuerburg. Neuerburg Castle was most likely destroyed in 1689 by the French Marshal François de Créquy, who also had Wittlich destroyed from Mont Royal. Today only a few remains of the walls can be found.

The Calmont is a prominent peak on the Moselle. The highest elevation is 380 meters high. Interestingly, the Calmont summit cross is not at the highest point, but below it. This may be because the Calmont is a ridge above the Moselle. The location of the summit cross offers a prominent view of the Moselle - better than from the highest point. Therefore, the summit cross makes much more sense at this point. Source: https://www.calmont-klettersteig-moselschleife.de/calmont/

The Bad Bertrich area, located in the Eifel region, features picturesque hills and scenic viewpoints rather than towering alpine peaks. These elevated spots offer breathtaking panoramic views of the volcanic landscape, river valleys, and forests, making them popular destinations for hiking and outdoor activities.
You'll find several stunning viewpoints. The View of the Moselle Loop from Calmont Summit Cross and the Panoramic view of the Moselle bend below the Calmont summit offer dramatic perspectives of the Moselle River and Europe's steepest vineyard. Another highlight is the View of the Moselle and Neef from Petersberg, providing picturesque views along the Moselsteig trail. The Todesangst Viewpoint also offers rewarding, dramatic scenery.
Yes, the region is rich in geological history. The Neuerburger Kopf is a striking basalt cone, 108 million years old, predating the Eifel's volcanic maars. Its unique conical shape is a result of hard basalt protecting sandstone from erosion. The area also features volcanic maars (volcanic lakes) and the unique stone formations of the 'Elf Grotto' (Cheese Grotto).
The Neuerburger Kopf was historically home to a robber baron's castle and later a Trier Electorate castle, with remnants still visible. Petersberg also boasts historical significance with late Romanesque fortifications, St. Peter's Chapel, and a mountain cemetery, including visible remnants of Roman fortifications from the late 3rd century.
Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful. In spring, nature is in full bloom, and in autumn, the vibrant fall colors create stunning landscapes. These seasons offer ideal conditions for hiking and enjoying the panoramic views.
While some routes can be challenging, many trails offer varied terrain suitable for different fitness levels. For example, the 'HeimatSpur Geo-Route' is a moderate 6.5 km hike, and the 'HeimatSpur Spazierweg Elfengrotte/Käsegrotte' is an easy 2.3 km walk, both suitable for families looking to explore the natural beauty.
The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Besides hiking, you can enjoy road cycling and running. For detailed routes, check out the guides for Hiking around Bad Bertrich, Road Cycling Routes around Bad Bertrich, and Running Trails around Bad Bertrich.
