The Caledonian Forest is very special, and it makes this climb very pleasant indeed.

The Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Center and the adjacent Allt Mor Café were a wonderful stop after our overnight stay a little further on at the Ryvoan Bothy. After a mediocre breakfast that we brought with us to the bothy, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast and good coffee.

Picturesque little lake at the foot of a rock face. A nice place to stop and enjoy the view or even take a dip in the refreshing water.

The Ryvoan Bothy is an authentic and, above all, small bothy. Because it's also relatively close to a large parking lot and visitor center for Glenmore Forest Park, and the path to it is easy to walk and cycle, it's likely to be crowded. Therefore, it wasn't my favorite during my cycling trip through the Cairngorms, but it does offer excellent accommodations with a few sleeping places, a table and chairs, and a stove.

The climb is worth it (sturdy shoes are helpful and hiking poles are quite comfortable for the descent) and you will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly or easy walks in Glenmore Forest?

Yes, the forest has many accessible paths perfect for families and beginners. A great option is the walk to An Lochan Uaine (the Green Lochan), which follows a well-maintained forest track. The lower path is particularly suitable for all abilities and offers a magical destination.

Can I bring my dog on hikes in Glenmore Forest?

Dogs are widely welcomed on the trails in Glenmore Forest. However, you should keep them under close control, especially between April and August during the bird breeding season. Also be mindful of wildlife, such as the free-ranging reindeer herd, and any livestock in the area.

Where is the best place to park for hiking in Glenmore Forest?

The main starting point for many trails is the Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Centre, which has a large car park. Other popular car parks include the Sugarbowl trailhead for routes towards the Ryvoan Pass and the Loch Morlich beach car park for lakeside walks. Parking can be busy, so arriving early is recommended.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced hillwalkers?

Absolutely. For a strenuous day out with rewarding views, consider the Bynack More & Meall a’ Bhuachaille loop. This demanding route covers significant distance and elevation, taking you to the summit of a Munro and offering panoramic vistas across the Cairngorms.

Which trails offer the best views of the Cairngorm mountains?

For spectacular panoramic views, the ascent of Meall a' Bhuachaille is highly recommended. The Herdsman's Hill – Ryvoan Bothy loop incorporates this summit, rewarding a stiff climb with incredible vistas over Loch Morlich and the northern Cairngorms.

What is the terrain like on the trails?

The terrain is very diverse. You'll find everything from wide, well-surfaced forest roads and gentle paths through ancient Caledonian pinewoods to rugged, boggy singletrack on open hillsides. Some routes, like the Chalamain Gap from Glenmore loop, involve scrambling over boulder fields.

Are most of the trails circular loops?

Many of the most popular hikes are circular, allowing you to experience a variety of scenery without retracing your steps. The Loch Morlich and Glenmore Forest loop is a fantastic example of a circular walk that combines woodland and lochside paths.

Where can I get food and drink after a hike?

The Allt Mor Cafe, located at the Glenmore Forest Park Visitor Centre, is a popular spot for post-hike refreshments. It's well-regarded for its coffee, homemade soup, and cakes, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. It's also dog-friendly.

What should I wear for hiking in Glenmore Forest?

Scottish weather is famously changeable, so layers are essential. Always pack waterproof trousers and a jacket, even if the day starts sunny. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are recommended as trails can be muddy and uneven. In winter, you will need appropriate winter gear, including ice grips for your boots.

What wildlife might I see while hiking?

Glenmore Forest is rich in wildlife. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and crested tits, especially in the ancient Caledonian pinewoods. You might also spot red deer, and the area is home to Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd, which can sometimes be seen on the higher slopes.
