Brainard Lake is a beautiful alpine lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness below the Continental Divide surrounded by subalpine forest. It is in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, which during the summer season usually requires a reservation and a fee, but if you are on your bike you do not need to pay or reserve a time slot. Because of the area's high elevation, snow typically remains until late spring, even on the paved road to the lake.

The South Saint Vrain Trail follows South Saint Vrain Creek pretty much the entire time whilst being tucked in a pretty dense forest. You can ride the trail to an intersection with a county road at both ends of this singletrack.

This section of trail is the main section of the South Saint Vrain Trail. The South Saint Vrain Trail leaves from just off the Peak to Peak Highway near Ward, CO, and follows the South Saint Vrain Creek in a pretty forest until it intersects with a fire road. You can actually take this trail all the way to the popular Brainard Lake Recreation Area in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, get in a great hike, and avoid the entrance fee and parking spot issues!

As seen in the pictures, there is an old VW Beetle that has seen...better days. This car can be reached by traveling through the Gordon Gulch camping area. Tucked away in Roosevelt National Forest, the Gordon Gulch dispersed camping area is a great option for free camping in the Front Range. There are 15 designated sites available, and camping is not permitted outside of these indicated areas.
