After turning off Big Thompson Canyon Road at Drake, the traffic dies down and the climbing continues on this fantastic stretch of road. As you go higher, you get great views over Estes Park to Rocky Mountain National Park. Going down to Drake from Estes via this section, expect lots of fun, tight curves and switchbacks on a somewhat narrow, but quiet road. Be aware as you descend of deer and other animals.

Riding up Big Thompson Canyon is an exhilarating, challenging experience for any rider local to, or visiting, the area. The canyon is located in northern Colorado and runs up from Loveland to Estes Park through the small town of Drake, following the Big Thompson River. Starting in Loveland, you climb up U.S. Highway 34, through the canyon towards Estes Park. Although there is a shoulder, please use caution when riding; the road is narrow and twisting and drivers are often distracted by the great views of towering cliffs, lush forests, and the flowing river. During peak seasons in the summertime, you are often sharing the road with large, oversized vehicles like RVs and trucks. Along the way, there are several pull-off areas where you can rest (from both the climb and the cars), hydrate, and take in the scenery.

Rist Canyon is a popular and challenging climb known for its scenic views and demanding ascent. The route starts near Fort Collins, in Bellvue, Colorado and climbs a little over 10 miles, with an elevation gain of 2,700 feet, and an average grade of 5%, with sections up to 12%. The ride offers beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains, forests, and meadows, and you can often see animals like mule deer (so be careful if descending!). The road is paved but is sometimes quite narrow, but fortunately traffic is fairly light. The climb begins with a gradual incline that becomes steeper, with the middle section offering consistent grades that test your endurance. The final few miles are the steepest. Notably, the top of Rist Canyon is actually higher than Estes Park, making it a significant achievement. Many cyclists do this route as an out-and-back, but itโs also possible to loop it by rolling down to Masonville and tackling a few short climbs back to Fort Collins.
