November 8, 2023, View of the Collegiate Peaks

Great view of the Collegiate Peaks. There is a bench right off the trail if you want to take a break from your run to enjoy the wonderful vistas.

There is a network of interconnected OHV trails and roads to the east and north of Buena Vista, Colorado. The trails are open to OHVs and bikes along with runners and hikers so stay alert. You can create a crazy amount of loops from just about anywhere in the trail system. It's all hilly dirt road running (besides the singletrack in the Midland Trail System).

The Midland Bike Trail makes for great running. The more eastern part of the trail has less bike specific components and is straighter and smoother. This portion of trail offers great views of the Sangre de Cristo Peaks to the south while still offering views of the Collegiate Peaks back west.

Midland Hill is the highest point on the ridge towering above the town of Buena Vista. The summit is 9,556 feet, and the trail is usually accessed from just outside of downtown. The peak offers views of the Collegiate Peaks and Buffalo Peaks (and Pikes Peak on clear days). The final mile up to the summit gains over 1,000 feet and is really rocky. The run usually turns into a power hike for those upper sections.

The Arkansas River Trail is a smooth, dirt path following along the side of the Arkansas River right next to downtown Buena Vista. The path can be easily linked to other trails in the area and is easy as far as the difficulty of the trail.

The upper trails in the Midland Hill area are the two Broken Boyfriend Trails (north and south). These trails definitely have mountain bike features, but they are still fun to run. There are large boulders and rocks in areas and then smooth sections with just dirt.

Great hike right out of East Main. The trail has many forks/loops so you can make it the right distance you are looking for. And great views of the Collegiate Peaks the entire way.
