Matthew
December 19, 2023, San Francisquito Creek Trail

The San Francisquito Creek Trail travels through various parks and across different bridges on the banks of the Santa Clara River and San Francisquito Creek. The path is completely paved and goes on both sides of the creek, giving you the chance to run or cycle a loop depending on what trailhead you start at.

Pico Canyon Service Road is a really popular road for biking and running. It starts off as paved and quickly turns to pretty smooth dirt. Some people just do out-and-backs on the road, but running past where the road deteriorates into Pico Canyon Trail gives you backdoor access into Santa Clarita Woodlands Park, and you can loop back to your car via trails and service roads (and a little bit of pavement) if you are in for a longer run.

There are a few route variations for the Towsley Canyon Loop Trail. There is a shortcut trail less than half a mile into the loop (traveling counter-clockwise) that you can take to cut a few miles and a lot of the elevation again out of the run. This trail still spends time in the forest next to giant rocks and trees, but it doesn't have the open views that the main trail has.

Towsley Canyon Loop Trail is one of the most (if not the most) popular trails in Santa Clarita Woodlands Park. The loop trail is a touch over 5 miles in total and spends some time on the forest floor in the trees, up high with the shrubs and open views, and even some time nestled up next to some canyon walls. There is a multitude of loop and route options at Santa Clarita Woodlands Park, and the Towsley Canyon Loop Trail is one of the most popular choices for good reason.

Valencia Summit Park features some paved paths with rolling hills that are perfect for running. There are flatter trails and paths around town, but the none of the hills are super long. These paths also offer some time in nature with trees and gardens next to the trails.
