January 12, 2025, Corral Canyon Trail

This beautiful 2.5-mile trail climbs through untouched wilderness to the Puerco Canyon through coastal sage scrub, native grasslands, and the riparian corridor of Corral Creek. Along the way, there are stunning ocean and mountain views. At 646m, a junction leads to the Puerco Canyon Motorway Connector Trail, which leads to the Cameron Nature Preserve at Puerco Canyon, offering several trails and scenic vistas if you want to extend your route.

This trailhead, adjacent to the Malibu Seafood Market, marks the beginning of a 2.5-mile loop trail that climbs to the Puerco Canyon. Parking is $12, or you can choose public transit. There is an MTA bus stop at the park entrance. Restrooms, a picnic table area, sitting benches and educational displays are here. During the spring and early summer, beautiful wildflowers cover the hillsides with fantastic ocean views. This trail is known to be very overgrown, so wearing long pants and sturdy footwear is ideal for a better experience. There is minimal shade along the way, so bringing a hat and plenty of water is recommended.

The views of the canyon, the Pacific Ocean and the city of Malibu below are majestic. There are many beautiful purple and yellow wildflowers in the spring. It is an excellent setting for panoramic photos of the stunning green mountains and ocean scenery.

This trailhead begins a nice trail that leads through lovely oak woodland, riparian woodland and coastal scrub into the canyon on the way to the falls. The trail crosses over the creek several times but should be no more than simple rock hopping to get across at any given time.

January 12, 2025, Lower Escondido Falls

This lower tier of the vast limestone falls is stunning. The beautiful moss-covered rock gives the falls a bearded look, worthy of taking some fantastic photos. Although it may be tempting to scramble to the top of the falls, it is not open to the public to avoid the risk of severe fall injuries and to preserve the fragile habitat.

Zuma Creek meanders its way through the whole of Zuma Canyon. Here is the main crossing point so it may be a good time dip your buff in the water if it's a typical hot day.

The word "Zuma" derives from the Chumash word for abundance, so it's a fitting name for this part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The canyons and ridges near here are rich with flora and fauna, nourished by the creeks that flow near here.

The Zuma Loop Trail is a relatively short trail that spurs off the Zuma Canyon Trail. Hikers and equestrians can climb an easy few hundred feet above the canyon valley to take in great ocean views and the rugged Zuma Canyon to the north.
