I particularly appreciate paths at the edge of the forest because they are more flooded with light and one can let one's gaze wander into the distance. Nevertheless, one walks protected from sun and rain.

The Eider, Schleswig-Holstein's longest river, stretches 188 kilometers from its source to its mouth in the North Sea. The river begins in the hilly moraine region south of Kiel, more precisely at the Heickenteich and a small lake on the Schönhagen estate. From there, the Eider winds its way through the state in numerous twists and turns, initially as the Upper Eider, past Rendsburg, where it empties into the Kiel Canal. The river's course is interrupted by the canal but continues westward until it empties into the North Sea near Tönning.

Today, the estate is no longer used for agriculture in the traditional sense. Instead, the gatehouse and the grounds house a social-therapeutic residential facility for people with assistance needs. The complex is thus not only a listed site steeped in history, but also a vibrant living space where social participation and inclusion are central. Visitors usually only notice the grounds as they pass by or drive by – all the more impressive when they have the opportunity to walk through it.

The Klein Nordsee estate is idyllically situated between Felde and the Kiel Canal in the Westensee Nature Park. The historic property dates back to a former outbuilding of the neighboring Bossee estate and was expanded into an independent estate in the 19th century. The Baroque gatehouse with its curved gables is particularly striking – an architectural gem that once marked the prestigious entrance to the estate. The estate is private and cannot be entered.
