From this summit with breathtaking views, you should be able to see the Estrella mountain range to the west and a part of the South Mountain Preserve to the east. I would recommend to reach this point by following the trails in the clockwise direction as to avoid a steep uphill and turn it into a technical descent instead.

Quartz Peak is the tallest peak in the Sierra Estrella Wilderness standing at 4,052 feet. This is a serious mountain with a serious mountain trail up to the ridge. Once on top, you'll get 360 degree views of the North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness and South Mountain Preserve.

The National Trail is the most heavily trafficked trail in South Mountain Preserve. At the same time, most people don't do the whole trail straight through in one go. This section is popular for connecting other trails in the preserve to each other. It's a fairly smooth trail that's completely runnable.
