As of 08/2026, the path is not recommended for racing bikes anyway due to some quite massive damage to the surface. Since you have to ride on the road (eastward) from Köthel anyway, you might as well skip the climb and descent.

Very good road bike route with good asphalt and practically no traffic. The hedges offer good protection from the wind.

I wouldn't drive on the road. There's still quite a bit of traffic here in the Hamburg area. The bike path works well, though.

Although there's generally little traffic on the road, I still prefer the bike path between towns. The cars zip by at an unpleasantly fast pace. The bike path is also very easy to ride. The asphalt is smooth and well-maintained. The number of root bumps is very small (it feels like one at the beginning and one at the end), and they're not very steep.
