Tips from the Community

Karl Hünenberg
June 4, 2026, Church of San Martino in Pura

The Martinskirche in Pura is first mentioned in documents in 1352. It was extended and rebuilt in the 16th/17th century. It stands in a dominant position and is accessible via a large staircase. The facade and the bell tower with an octagonal superstructure date from the Baroque period. Traces of frescoes from the 16th century can be seen on the southern exterior wall. Saint Martin on horseback, Saint Catherine, and the Holy Trinity are still recognizable. The columns along the nave with barrel vault and lunettes are in the Corinthian style. On the opposite facade to the left, a late Gothic fresco with figures of saints. The main altar is from the 19th century, while the tabernacle with rich stucco work dates from the 17th century.

The sacred building is dedicated to the Madonna and preserves some devotional frescoes inside; on the altar there is a fresco representing the Virgin of Graces who welcomes the faithful under her cloak: on the right the Benedictine nuns (who lived in the monastery attached to the building) and on the left some commoners with the chaplain.

Going up from Dumenza you cross the border by crossing the old gate on the “ramina” and you reach the Old Customs House of Astano, now converted into a civilian residence.
