Look here, the Roman Catholic Basilica of Mariazell is a real gem and the most important pilgrimage site here in Austria. As early as the 14th century, a Gothic church was built here with a distinctive pointed arch portal. The central tower is a whole 90 meters high, and it houses the largest bell in Styria, weighing a whopping 5,702 kilos! Around the tower stand two more towers, which were added in the 17th century during the Baroque period. The Basilica is open every day from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and for those who are really interested, there are regular guided tours through the treasury and the votive collection. A real insider tip and a place to pause and marvel, especially for us from Lower Austria. Anyone who doesn't know it yet should visit it sometime, it's really worth it.

Pope Benedict XVI formulated the following thought during the Way of the Cross contemplation (Good Friday 2010) in the Colosseum in Rome, which perhaps might also be of interest here in front of this sacred little monument in the form of a wayside cross for the passer-by: »In the silence that surrounds Holy Saturday, we live, touched by the boundless love of God, in the expectation of the morning of the third day, the morning of the victory of God’s love, the morning of the light that enables the eyes of the heart to see life, difficulties, suffering in a new way. Our failures, our disappointments, our bitter experiences, where everything seems to collapse, are illuminated by hope. The Father confirms the act of love [of Jesus Christ] on the cross, and the radiant light of the resurrection envelops and transforms everything ...« (Pope Benedict XVI.)

The terrace is great. Unfortunately, the food is less so: tasteless frozen Kaiserschmarrn for a hefty 13 euros, which sits heavily in the stomach.

Turning off the main street of Mitterbach, opposite the lumber yard, we can reach this point, from which there is a nice view of the Erlaufstausee. The lake was created artificially, we can only see a small part of it from this point. Unfortunately, we cannot ride bicycles on the hiking trails. For a break, we can stop at the Stapelhaus cafeteria, from whose terrace we can also see the lake.
