With options to climb higher to Upper Lena Lake, this is an enjoyable day hike with gentle switchbacks to the beautiful Lena Lake. The lake is surrounded by huge old-growth fir trees and there are nice campsites along the shore. If you like to spend the night at the lake shore you need to obtain a Wilderness Camping Permits that is available 6 months prior to your trip. Visit https://www.recreation.gov/permits/4098362 to reserve a permit. Lena Lake is a quota area, so camping is limited. Absolutely. For a gentle walk through the forest, the Fallen Giant Cedar loop from Union is a great choice. It's a short, relatively flat trail that's perfect for all ages. Another popular option is the Staircase Rapids Nature Trail in the Olympic National Park, known for its beautiful river views and old-growth trees.
Many trails in the Olympic National Forest are dog-friendly, as long as your dog is on a leash. Always check the specific regulations for the park or forest area you plan to visit before you go.

It depends on where you hike. For trails in the Olympic National Forest, you will typically need a Northwest Forest Pass or an America the Beautiful Pass for parking at trailheads. Summer and early fall (July through September) generally offer the best hiking conditions, with warmer weather and snow-free trails, especially at higher elevations. Spring is beautiful for wildflowers and flowing waterfalls on lower-elevation trails. Some lower trails can be hiked year-round, but always be prepared for rain and check trail conditions.
Parking can be limited, especially on weekends at popular spots like the Lena Lake Trailhead. It's always a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot. Carpooling is also encouraged. Remember that a recreation pass, like the Northwest Forest Pass, is often required to park at trailheads in the National Forest.
