Steengroeve, Musschelkalk (Triassic) The limestone formations originated about 240 million years ago from algal deposits from the sea. It was the transition from the Permian to the Triassic period. Winterswijk was located by the sea, approximately at the height of the Equator. A major extinction had taken place, wiping out 90% of living creatures. Nature had to recover, and the action of ebb and flow allowed very thin algal mats to form. These thin layers now form the Musschelkalk. A layer that formed over 10 million years and comes almost to the surface. Small fossils are found in the limestone, for example, a famous find of a woodlouse! But a skeleton of a Nothosaurus has also been found, on display in the Naturalis museum in Leiden. The fact that the limestone is so close to the surface is due to the effects of previously mentioned plate tectonics such as earthquakes, and fractures and erosion. The quarry is owned by Sibelco and limestone has been extracted since 1933. The limestone is used to make filler for asphalt, hard glass, ceramics and agricultural lime, among other things. It is also used as a means of printing building material. You can book a guided tour through the VVV tourist office. Incidentally, an Eagle Owl breeds annually in the small old quarry. And you can also walk through the Natura 2000 area Willinks Weust.
