February 20, 2024, Champlain Valley Trail

The 12-mile section between Fort Edward and Fort Ann is a mix of road and off road sections. Though some parts are unpaved they are made up of crushed rock and rideable on just about any bike. This is a multi-use trail though, so be sure to keep an eye out of hikers.

This lock was in use until the 1940s when the canal was rerouted. It's possible to explore the area and see the remains of the old canal wall paralleling Canal Street, which is paved over the old canal route. Also, the arched aqueduct is a remnant of even older architecture as it was built in 1869.

Peebles Island State Park is most well known for its views of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. If you want to explore the trails on the property, you'll have to leave your bike behind, but you get pretty great views from the park roads and the Peebles Island Trail, which is open to bikes.

The Old Champlain Canal Trail is a mixture of pavement, stone, dirt, and gravel. The trail follows the canal pretty much the entire time, and this particular section leading into Troy passes through the public 4th Street Park.

During the wet season the water rushing over the rocks can be quite a sight to see from the safety of the bridge. Don't be tempted to get any closer, it is a dangerous watercourse.
