July 8, 2024, Swedish Settlement

The title to this trip is misleading. You will not get to the Swedish Settlement if you follow the directions given. The Swedish Settlement is east of the parking lot and not on the route indicated. It is in fact, east of Juniper Rock and the Marengo River.

Lake Three has a boat landing and is a fantastic place to kayak. The lake also has an old rustic campground which closed in recent years due to budget cuts.

From here you get fantastic views of the Marengo River valley. You climb up a large rocky outcropping, so be prepared for some scrambling! The views are especially stunning in autumn.

Here you will find a towering lookout which used to be an old fire tower. There is a precarious metal ladder to the top which is well out of reach to deter passersby.

There is a packed-gravel parking area with ample space. The trail is well-marked and scenic as you head west to Porcupine Lake or east to Long Mile Lookout.

The trail around Black Lake is singletrack with a nice new wooden bridge across Fishtrap Creek. Depending on the time of year, the trail can be scenic and easy to follow or overgrown and boggy.
