Mineral Wells Trailway - All Gravel/Sand

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Kitty-litter grade and smaller gravel with some ruts and washboards here and there - the biggest danger is the deeper sections of gravel that exist and act like sandtraps- gotta keep on your toes and those pressures low for best stability. Also, best to bunnyhop those bridge transitions as they're about 2" or so. This is an equestrian and hiking trail too, so be aware of the piles of horse exhaust you definitely do now want to be picking out of your tires. But it is a BEAUTIFUL stretch of reclaimed railway with a nice canopy of trees to mitigate the wind or any direct sun. Also at the end, it dumps you right into the state park and a nice park store stocked with the #1 Texas summer cycling fuel: ice cream.

The toilets are kind of sad and depressing here, but there is a map of the trailway and a water hose available nearby for drinking water. It saved my life because I ran out of water on the trail. There is also drinking water available at the Garner Trailhead and the Mineral Wells trailhead. There is a parking lot at the Weatherford Trailhead big enough to fit 20-30 cars. There is a small lake nearby as well.

Dry Creek Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Very open bridge with plenty of views of the sizeable creek that runs underneath. It was not flowing very well when I was here. It would be cool to come back here after a hard rain to see how flooded this creek can get.

There are hardly ever any visitors here, so you are almost guaranteed to have the place to yourself. Aside from the traffic on the highway nearby it is a very quiet place to sit and think. There are some statues, there's a collection of vehicles from the Vietnam War, a giant helicopter which is the centerpiece of the park, and a memorial garden. There is also an entrance into the Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway along the backside of the park. This is where I like to park while I'm riding the trail.
