JULIO TENDERO ROSELL
January 7, 2026, Castillo de Frías

The Castle of the Dukes of Frías was declared a Site of Cultural Interest on April 22, 1949. It is situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the town and almost the entire Tobalina Valley. The oldest surviving remains date from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, but most of what remains is from the 15th century. Visitors can explore the large parade ground, part of the curtain wall, and the rampart walk, and climb the keep. Opening hours are daily from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the entrance fee is €2.

A true boundary between zones, crossed by a road, just at an altitude of 1,000 metres.

On the approximately 800-kilometer route through northern Spain – perhaps even earlier in France – the pilgrim has repeatedly crossed borders that may have held significant significance in the past, and some still do today from a regional political perspective. However, for us, who are striving toward the tomb of the Apostle James, the "Credencial" was the only important identification document, and pilgrimage routes – like the heavens – have always been borderless.

Surrounded by nature, this sanctuary pays homage to Santa Casilda, a local saint. Its impressive architecture and serene atmosphere create a space conducive to reflection and devotion. Undoubtedly one of the most spectacular architectural monuments in the region.
