Wear waterproof shoes/boots because even on the longest day of the year it's still wet underfoot

On this stretch of the Solar Walk in Davagh Forest near the OM Observatory a pretty stone bridge spans over the Davagh water creating a picturesque scene. It's also fascinating to note that this area is a Dark Sky Park, meaning it boasts exceptional dark night skies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly walks in the Glenlark area?

Yes, for a straightforward and scenic walk suitable for families, consider the trails within Gortin Glen Forest Park. It's a popular spot with established paths, a play area for kids, and a coffee shop. The park offers a great introduction to the region's landscape without the challenging terrain of the higher peaks.

Can I bring my dog on hikes around Glenlark?

Dogs are welcome on many trails, but it's important to keep them under control, especially on open moorland where livestock may be grazing. Trails through forests like Gortin Glen are often a good choice. Always check local signage at trailheads for specific rules regarding dogs.

What is the terrain like in the Sperrin Mountains?

The terrain around Glenlark is varied. You'll find yourself on a mix of forest tracks, open heather-clad moorland, and rolling hills. Be prepared for boggy and uneven ground, particularly on higher routes and after rainfall. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for a comfortable experience.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced walkers?

Definitely. The Sperrins offer plenty of challenges. For a demanding day out, the Craignamaddy Circuit β€” Sperrins is a long and difficult route that traverses open mountain terrain with significant elevation gain, rewarding you with a true sense of the area's wildness.

What are the parking options for trails in the area?

Parking varies by location. Larger, managed sites like Gortin Glen Forest Park have dedicated car parks. For more remote mountain hikes, such as those starting along the Sperrin Road, parking is often limited to small lay-bys or roadside verges. Arrive early to secure a spot, and always park considerately without blocking access.

Are there any circular or loop trails available?

Yes, there are several excellent loop trails. For a moderate walk through the rolling landscape, the Vinegar Hill Loop β€” Sperrins is a great option. Another popular choice is the Davagh Forest loop β€” Sperrins, which offers a pleasant walk through woodland.

How does hiking in Glenlark compare to Gortin Glen Forest Park?

Gortin Glen Forest Park offers well-maintained, waymarked trails with excellent facilities, making it ideal for families and more casual walkers. The Glenlark area provides a wilder, more remote experience. Hikes here often involve navigating open, boggy moorland and ascending peaks like Sawel Mountain, appealing to those seeking solitude and a greater challenge.

What should I know about safety and weather in the Sperrins?

The weather in the Sperrin Mountains can change very quickly. Even on a clear day, be prepared for rain, wind, and poor visibility. Always carry waterproof gear, extra layers, a map, and a compass (and know how to use them), as phone signal can be unreliable. Let someone know your planned route and expected return time.

Are there any easy hikes for beginners?

Yes, the area has options for those new to hiking. For a pleasant and relatively flat circular walk, the trail around Loughmacrory is a great choice. It's a well-regarded local spot for a gentle stroll through woodland and by the water's edge.

What kind of wildlife and plants might I see?

The Sperrins are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a rich ecosystem. The landscape is dominated by heather-clad moorlands and blanket bog. Keep an eye out for birds of prey soaring overhead. Lough Lark is of special scientific interest for its population of the rare Tall Bog-sedge, a plant with very specific habitat needs.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Glenlark?

The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the stunning, unspoilt scenery of the glaciated valley and the sense of tranquility found on the remote mountain trails.
