If walking the route I've suggested I would wear good waterproof boots and if your unsteady on your feet take poles to help balance great walk to suit all abilities

A song that—originally from the American gospel tradition—has traveled the world, fitting perfectly for this church, which the parish has entrusted to the patron saint of "All Saints." "Oh when the Saints go marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, oh Lord, I want to be in that number, oh when the Saints go marching in." Over the decades, new versions of the lyrics have repeatedly emerged; the original text cannot be verified due to the early oral tradition. Many artists have taken up the gospel song and released their own interpretations, such as Bruce Springsteen with his session band at a concert in Dublin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6eKkirEcgE

A great little village with an excellent pub, a couple of welcoming cafés and a shop. It's a great pit stop on a run. The six-arch stone bridge which spans the river Barle is about 100 years old.

This side of the river is just as beautiful as the other, but a little flatter. Sometimes you have to fight your way through some bushes or over tree trunks, but everything is doable. Very varied

Are the hiking trails around Dulverton suitable for dogs?

Yes, Exmoor is generally very dog-friendly, and many trails around Dulverton are great for walking with dogs. Riverside paths are particularly popular. However, please be aware that you will be walking through areas with livestock and wildlife, so it's essential to keep your dog under close control or on a lead, especially on open moorland and in fields with sheep.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Absolutely. The area offers several gentle walks perfect for families. A great option is the Tarr Steps clapper bridge – Tarr Steps riverside walk loop from Withypool. It's a relatively short and flat walk along the beautiful River Barle, centered around the famous ancient bridge, which is always a hit with children.

Can I find a good pub for a meal or a drink after a hike?

Yes, Dulverton is a classic Exmoor town with several welcoming pubs and inns that are perfect for relaxing after a walk. You'll find options serving local ales and hearty food right in the town center, making it easy to finish your hike and find a rewarding meal without needing to travel further.

What are the must-see natural features near Dulverton?

The area is rich in natural beauty. The River Barle itself is a highlight, flowing through a stunning wooded valley. Are there any challenging long-distance hikes available?

Yes, Dulverton is a key point for several long-distance paths. The Exe Valley Way runs through the town, and the famous Two Moors Way, which crosses both Exmoor and Dartmoor, passes nearby. These trails offer dedicated hikers the chance to undertake multi-day treks through some of Southwest England's most dramatic landscapes.

What is the terrain like on the trails around Dulverton?

The hiking here is varied. You can expect gentle, well-trodden paths along the River Barle, but many routes also venture into the wider Exmoor landscape. This involves ascents and descents through ancient woodlands and across open, sometimes boggy, moorland. Proper hiking footwear is essential for tackling the mixed terrain.
