The St Stithians Reservoir loop in West Cornwall offers an easy 4.8-mile (7.8 km) hike around the region's largest inland water. You'll enjoy continuous views of the reservoir, passing through varied terrain including farmland, open moorland, meadows, and wet woodland. With only 92 feet (28 metres) of elevation gain, this largely flat route takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes to complete. Keep an eye out for the imposing Stithians Dam, a significant landmark along the way, and picturesque pastoral landscapes. While generally easy, some sections can be rough or muddy, especially in wetter seasons, so appropriate walking boots are recommended.

The Stithians Dam often serves as a convenient starting point for your walk around the reservoir. This popular loop is suitable for most fitness levels, making it a great choice for a relaxed outing. Be prepared for potentially muddy or overgrown sections, particularly during winter and spring, by wearing sturdy walking boots. You'll find amenities like cafes and pubs near the reservoir, perfect for a break before or after your hike. The area is also well-regarded for dog walking, so feel free to bring your canine companion along.

Beyond the scenic views, the St Stithians Reservoir area is a hub for wildlife, supporting rich birdlife and offering opportunities to spot foxes, badgers, and various birds from hides. The trail also provides glimpses into Cornwall's mining heritage, with large, ruler-straight stone hedges that some believe were built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars. As the largest inland water in the region, the reservoir is not just for hiking; it's also a popular spot for watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding, especially in summer. This blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and recreational activities makes the loop a distinctive experience in West Cornwall.

Small on the outside, but a very large pub on the inside, perfect for a break. As always, with Cornish cream tea.

On the other side of the lake from the watersports centre, it is calm and relaxing. There are beautiful views across the water to the hills of Cornish farmland. A really peaceful spot.

The walk around the lake is pleasant. Despite heavy rain, the paths were not particularly boggy. The low level of the lake meant that we could see the remains of old stone walls that had been previously submerged

Tranquil place to stop for a drink and something to eat. Watching over the calm waters of St Stithians Lake with lush Cornish farmland in the background.

Sitithians Lake is the largest inland water in West Cornwall and boasts a variety of watersports at an activity centre, fishing, lakeside walking and a café. The lake is a reservoir, dammed in 1967 which submerged 274 acres of farmland. This bridge was created to replace roads that were now under water.
