A really fun descent down into the forest. Be sure to watch where you put your feet as there are some deep holes on the way down.

Hen Mountain is one of the less challenging climbs of the Mourne Mountain range, not to worry though, as it still provides the stunning panoramic views that the Mournes are so good at showcasing. There are a few rocky outcrops up here which can be discovered and explored, just do watch your footing as you move about.

What are some easier hikes suitable for a family outing?

I'm looking for a truly challenging hike. What do you recommend?

Are there any trails with waterfalls?

While the main routes focus on mountain ascents, you can find waterfalls in the wider region. The nearby Clamp Hole Waterfall is a popular spot with locals and has some lovely walks around it. Many trails, like those along the Yellow Water River, also feature beautiful riverside scenery with smaller cascades.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Is it possible to get to the trailheads using public transport?

Accessing trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging as many start in rural locations. It's generally more convenient to travel by car. If you are relying on public transport, plan to travel to a nearby town like Hilltown and then use a local taxi service to reach the start of your hike.

What should I know about parking at the trailheads?

Parking is available at the start of many popular routes, but it can be limited, especially on weekends. Some car parks, like the one for Kilclooney Wood, have height barriers, which might restrict access for larger vehicles like vans or campers. Arriving early is always a good idea to secure a spot.
