Hall in Tirol - Old Town One of Tyrol's most beautiful towns awaits those embarking on a journey of discovery to the medieval town of Hall in Tirol. One of the best-preserved old towns, and also the largest in western Austria, it forms a successful symbiosis with modern architectural concepts such as the salt warehouse, the UMIT university, and the Parkhotel. The tasteful buildings of Hall's old town bear witness to its past as a prosperous city: In the Middle Ages, salt production made Hall the most important economic center in North Tyrol. At that time, the town was a crucial transshipment point for trade on the Inn River, and the princely mint, established in Hall in the mid-15th century, contributed significantly to its further economic growth. Town Hall / Trading House, Schwaz The Schwaz Town Hall, built in 1970, was originally constructed between 1500 and 1509 by the Stöckl family of industrialists. After their bankruptcy, it was acquired in 1563 by the Tyrolean sovereign. From then on, it served as the seat of the mining authority. Following the decline of mining in Schwaz, the building was sold to the merchant Bartholomäus Penz. He commissioned Christoph Anton Mayr to paint the facade in 1760. In 1916, Ludwig Penz created the bronze figure of Georg von Frundsberg on the right corner of the building. The Zillertal Railway bridge also crosses the river, and the cycle path is a small gem of old railway engineering. Caution cyclists: Heading into the valley, the cycle path makes a 90° turn to the left directly at the end of the bridge, then immediately turns sharply and steeply 180° to continue under the bridge and further into the valley. So brake in time!
