View from Monte Urgull

Highlight • Viewpoint

Urgull is a mountain in the city of San Sebastián in the Spanish Basque Country. It is mostly forested and forms the end of a promontory between La Concha Bay to the west and the mouth of the Urumea River to the east. In the north it falls directly into the Bay of Biscay, the port and old town are attached to its southern slope. Due to its location and the 12.5 meter high statue of Christ erected on its summit, it dominates the cityscape.

Due to its strategic importance, a castle was built on the mountain as early as the 12th century, which was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt and adapted to military requirements. Today it is known as Castillo de la Mota. In 1924 a military cemetery was inaugurated on the northern slope of the mountain for the British soldiers who fell in battle for the fortress in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. In the meantime, the Urgull has become a popular destination. (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urgull)

October 18, 2025, Irumugarrieta Peak (811 m)

Caution! Approaching Irumugarrieta Peak from the south, you have to climb a serious, vertical wall. Unfortunately, with a dog, we had to give up here and fought our way down cross-country through the undergrowth. The other way around, it probably won't work with a dog even without abseiling. The tour is still very beautiful, but I wouldn't do the special descent again.

The hike up Monte Urgull is highly recommended. It offers wonderful views of the city, beaches and lush vegetation. On the descent in a southerly direction, a café invites you to refresh yourself after a sweaty ascent.
